In a rather unusual move, MultiChoice is to launch a 24-hour channel dedicated to the murder trial of the South African paralympian, Oscar Pistorius.

The Oscar Pistorius Trial: A Carte Blanche Channel to be officially launched on March 02 will be available on DStv Channel 199.

The South African company, MultiChoice operates the DStv Satellite Television service.

In a statement, the company says the channel “will feature round-the-clock coverage of the legal proceedings, as well as exclusive documentaries, profiles and in-depth expert analysis”.

According to MultiChoice, the pop-up channel will be available exclusively to DStv Premium, Extra and Compact customers.

Aletta Alberts, Head of Content for MultiChoice says a team from the well-respected investigative journalism programme The Carte Blanche would run the channel.

“This pop-up channel will give our viewers in-depth coverage of the Oscar Pistorius trial, with a rich variety of content and social media integration….The Carte Blanche producers were the obvious choice to create and package the channel,” said Alberts.

Televised court cases are common in South Africa. However, the channel may not carry live proceedings from the courtroom as the trial judge in the High Court will still need to rule on what the media can carry live.

Pistorius is accused of killing his model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day last year. The incident happened at the Blade Runner’s porch home in Pretoria. He has pleaded not guilty.

Charged with premeditated murder, Pistorius is currently out on R1 million (£74, 000) bail with strict conditions including handing over his passport and not to going to his home, the crime scene.

Pistorius is scheduled to return to the Pretoria High Court from Monday, 3 March to Thursday, 20 March for the start of his trial.

Meanwhile, in a move to drum up support for the 2012 Paralympics gold medallist, his family has dedicated his official website “to the latest news about developments as well as messages of support”.
